Movie executives are predicting that 3-D movies are the wave of the future. But there is one little problem, people are getting sick from watching the special effects. Many viewers complain of feeling dizzy, nauseous, suffer from eyestrain and headaches.
AMC Entertainment is just one of several businesses that are currently upgrading theaters to accommodate this latest technology. The movie industry is moving forward in producing 3-D films regardless of the effects it has on the audience. The public has shown its lack of excitement over this latest trend. With 3-D movies costing on average $3 more per ticket, the box office is feeling the snub.
Berkeley's Visual Space Perception Laboratory is designing specialized 3-D glasses. The lens of these glasses are designed to accommodate the eye's natural inclination to focus on objects at various distances. The goal of these glasses is to reduce eyestrain. University of Arizona is working on a wearable helmet-like device whose purpose is to also reduce eyestrain. Is an audience willing to purchase these unique devices just to watch a movie? Time will tell. For now, sufferers can either close one eye while watching a 3-D flick or avoid going to see the movie.
No wonder why I don't like 3D movies. I agree that 3D movies are very futuristic and have that extra feel added, but it's not for everyone.
ReplyDeleteSome comments from Healthy Reader:
"3D plays tricks on your brain, mimicking symptoms of motion sickness. The problem is all in your head and, in particular, your eyes. 5 percent of the population have such bad eye coordination they can’t perceive 3-D at all. But if these people watch Avatar they won’t get a headache.
About 30 percent of moviegoers have enough eye coordination to see 3-D, but only with a struggle. These are the people who are more likely to get headaches and eye fatigue while watching 3-D on the big screen.
You can’t help but wonder about long term effects should 3D invade our lives on a more regular basis."

Yes, I agree that 3D movies are the future but there are a lot of problems with these types of movies. I think for the future there will be much better sloutions for the problems of 3D movies. People like 3D because it makes them feel like they are right in the center of the action.
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree. 3-D movies do make people sick. I know it does for me, I get a strange motion sickness feeling, but not quite, very strange. Both my wife and I avoid 3-D movies and shows. I see that the cable providers are now starting to promote their 3-D channels. I can’t ever see myself wearing 3-D glasses sitting in my living room watching a movie. I want to relax not add to my eye strain and feeling of sickness. Also these 3-D pictures don’t look as good as the standard 2-D anyway, they tend to be darker. Also your mind adjusts the 2-D and you see and understand depth on a standard screen. I’m not sure why the Hollywood studios are pushing 3-D so hard. Especially when it costs more.
ReplyDeleteI cannot watch 3-D movies in the theatre or at home. I get headaches and feel nauseous. I don’t know why every movie that comes out now is in 3-D. It is certainly not worth it for me to pay the extra money only to feel sick. I’ll just keep watching the movies in good ol’ 2-D. I do not need to feel like I’m in the movie and I will not pay for some strange helmet to watch a movie.
