Black & White Movie's Effect on Fashion

Movie-goers of the 1920's & 1930' s were influenced by the glamour and fashion on the big screen. When seated in the theater, they found themselves in a world that was exciting and full of discovery. These movies had a huge impact on the world of fashion. Hollywood set the tone for fashion, hairstyles and make-up. Katherine Hepburn made it chic for women to wear trousers. Clark Gable's sexy and debonaire moustache was soon adorning masculine faces throughout the world, and women began wearing their hair in short bobs similar to that sported by Louise Brooks.

  1. I also think that Katherine's sister, Audrey, was a tremendous influence on fashion in Hollywood. My favorite were the costumes of My Fair Lady

  2. The general audience continues to follow movie stars and copy their fashion and haircuts. Back in the 50's most young men wore their hair slicked back, and women usually had their hair done up. I love the black and white films, especially the Dick Powell mystery/murder series. An excellent thing to do on a cold winter afternoon.

  3. Geraldine, I think the fashion in the past had to do with what was in style then. If you lokke at the present now people are wearing what is in style now. It is a trend that last for awhile then dies off. Every trend does make a come back for a bit though. You see people today trying to pull off the Marylin
Monroe look. Art is always changing from fashion to different styles.

  4. Geraldine, Fashion in movies continues to sway how people dress and wear their hair today. If you see something in a movie that you like, you try to mimic it. I find it so interesting that this went on back when there were only black and white films. This just shows that culture is similar today as it was back then. Everyone like the same types of things. Great post. Mary Ann Reday.

  5. Well, I'm not to big on black and white movies, but if Katherine Hepburn made it possible to dress like men and still look good, then I thank her very much. The style today is about women wearing tight clothes to show their hips and breast. However, I would love to dress like a guy.

  6. Geraldine, the movies of the past was a way to look into that time period as well ass give people a taste of how nice life was back then. Every look in every time period stays around for awhile but then dies off and starts a new one. from the style of a couple years ago with baggy clothing has worn off and now people are wear tighter fitting clothing.its just the cycle of clothing styles.

  7. I loved this time period of fashion and style. Many people saw these movies and wanted to be just like Katherine Hepburn. Women followed her and copied her hair and clothes style. Even if some styles were a little different like cutting your hair short or wearing trousers. Many people just wanted to be like movie stars.
