The wizardry of the Wizard of Oz

I loved how through technology, the people involved with the production of the movie were able to depict the tremendous difference of Kansas and Oz; accentuating the grey vista of Kansas through the use of sepia tones, as portrayed in the novel, then bringing to life - through the Technicolor process - the vivid colors of the land of Oz

  1. This was my favorite movie when I was a child. I was always amazed at the way the movie was filmed, and how the "color" changed once the house landed. You see, we didn't have color tv in our house, and I had to go to my Aunt's house to finally see what the wonderful sensation was all about. This was the same for the Walt Disney show's that would come on TV on Sunday evenings. The entire color process was a major contribution in filming production.

  3. Carm, I saw this movie when I was a child also.I was always liked how the movie was filmed, and how the color changed once the house landed. The entire color process was a major contribution in filming. Movies came along way also with technology. You look at a movie from the 50's and 10's and you will see the difference all because of technology evolving. With this happening more and more movies had more art to them based on design and color.

  4. Carm, this is a wonderful post. The Wizard of Oz is a great classical film. I watched it with my parents when I was a child, watched it with my children while they were growing up, and now watch it with my grandchildren. It was definitely a film before its time. That is why it is still popular today. I still think it is cool how the film mixes black and white technology with color. The Wizard of Oz is one of the best films ever made. Great post. Mary Ann Reday.

  5. Carm, i can remember when i saw this movie for the first time and was amazing how it was filmed and the different amounts or color and how the color was used to tell the film. I think how they filmed this movie is the only way it would have been a hit. If it was done any other way i could not have seen it be a popular or such a historic movie. once again a great post.

  6. This movie is one of the classic pieces of American cinema., itself an adaptation of a book. Everything came together in this film, from Judy Garland's believable portrayal of Dorothy to the brilliant use of color offset with the brownish tones of Kansas. The fact that the Emerald City was a character itself added to the depth of the story. I loved this movie as a child and still do today.

  7. I love this movie! I think most people do. It was such a new experience for many people in 1939. I remember for a class in high school we had to do a little bit of research on this movie and I was amazed on the advanced technology of those times. Technicolor sure paved the way for more recent films.
    Loved the post!

  8. This movies a classic. I remember having to watch this movie in elementary school for both my Art and Music classes. The assignment was to pick a scene and draw and emphasize the major points in the scene we were drawing, while in Music class we had to just watch and observe the musical aspect of the movie.

  9. Great post! Who did not watch The WIzard of Oz as a child? My younger brother is in second grade and loves this movie! I remember being freaked out by the flying monkeys!

The technicolor aspect was weird, but being born in the 80's color television was the norm, and I remember the shades in this movie were different than other movies and programs I watched. It is very interesting to see the sepia picture of Dorothy.

  11. I remember watching this movie all the time as a kid. I always thought something was wrong with the VHS tape because it went from black and white to color. I think that this film will go down in history as one of the best movies ever made. I think that this film is technologically advanced for its time.

  12. The wizard of Oz has so many metaphors and imagery to it.It gives one a mystical feeling. Even though the characters are all fake in the movie, they reflect again society. The witch has a representation of something to a person. I not going to give my representation of characters because i feel it might influence others who had not seen the movie an idea. Back the issue is that this movie can also reflect an individual in respect with the three Characters that Dorothy meets on her journey.
